Pucker up
Canadians love their hockey, although to a Canadian the game involves ice, a puck rather than a ball and a lot of high-speed contact. The first official game of ice hockey was played in 1855 in Kingston, Ontario. Although similar styles of games had been played around the world in various forms for hundreds of years, the ice version is said to have been adapted from the Native American game of lacrosse specifically to enable play on ice.Today there is a lot of work goes into preparing the ice – the ideal thickness is about 1.9cm (3/4”). Any thicker and the ice becomes too soft and slows play, but any thinner and there’s a risk of skates cutting through it. Hockey pucks are frozen before being used in play as the rubber from which they are made becomes too bouncy otherwise.
The longest running television program in Canada is CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada, which was first broadcast in 1955.
And any guesses what the official national sport of Canada is? It’s lacrosse.
