Table at the crossroads
Due to its location, Serbia has adopted a style of cuisine with influences from its Mediterranean and near northern neighbours – namely Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and Hungary. Meals are generally hedonistic affairs, with starters consisting of cream, cheese, dried meat and corn bread, followed by soup, then a main dish and dessert. A local brandy is consumed as an aperitif and much ado is made of proposing toasts and clinking glasses. Coffee is a staple at every meal and in between. Serbia is also the world’s largest exporter of raspberries, providing about one third of all global supplies.
