Island Life

Singapore comprises the main island and more than 60 mostly uninhabited smaller ones. If you speak Malay, some of those islands’ names might cause you to raise an eyebrow. For example:

  • Pulau Brani – Island of the Brave
  • Pulau Jong – Junk Island (that’s junk as in the Chinese ship, not a waste disposal facility)
  • Pulau Hantu – Ghost Island
  • Pulau Sekudu – Frog Island
  • Pulau Senang – Island of Ease (ironically an off-limits military training ground)
  • Sentosa – Tranquility (there’s nothing too strange about that, but it was formerly known as Pulau Belakang
  • Mati – Island of Death from Behind)
